Chapter 13

As Stellaluna continued to follow Witch Way down the hill, she could hear the sound of a very old tree's creaking laughter. "That must be what a cackle sounds like," she thought to herself. Up ahead, she could see that the path had no choice but to turn to the left, where a giant ancient tree had fallen over many years ago, blocking the old path. When she got to where she had to turn because she had no choice, because the width of the old tree, which was now the height of the old tree, was still a considerable height. She looked to the left, and she could see some of the roots of the old tree sticking high into the air. They were less than a stick toss away down the path. This was once a tall tree,” she thought to herself. “Even lying down, this tree is taller than Me.” She looked to the right to see how far into the woods the once very tall tree went, but being once so very tall and the forest so thick, she could not see where the top of the old tree now lay.

She continued to follow the path to where some of the roots of the old tree stood out into the air. At the end of one of the roots that was sticking out into the air, she saw a face. “You must be StellaLuna. I’m Locasta, also known as the witch of the woods,” the old tree said. “I heard Lost has found you.

"Yes," said StellaLuna. "I was hoping you could tell me how to get back to the entrance of the forest. That way, I can find my human. I was told that the way to lose Lost is to find something, and I am trying to find him.”

“There’s two ways to lose Lost”, said Locasta. “Find is one way; be found is another. Do you think your human is looking for you?”

"I'm sure he's looking for me by now,” said StellaLuna. “I was having so much fun finding new friends in the trees, I didn’t pay attention to where I was going, or how much time I spent looking.”

“When two things move about trying to find each other,” said Locasta, “Lost can use time against them in a way that they could both be in the same exact place, but separated by time and not find each other.”

"This forest is quite large and full of many paths that like to crisscross here and there,” said Locasta. "Even if I knew where you entered the forest, all I could do is point you in the general direction you need to go from here. I wouldn’t be able to tell which paths to turn onto, and more importantly, which ones not to. You might end up on a different path than your human, or be at the same crisscross, but just miss each other in the distance of time. Sometimes, you just need to stop, wait, and listen, when you know someone is looking for you. Did your human teach you the tree chant?”

“Yes,” said StellaLuna. “At first, I wasn’t saying it quite right, but Hyde and Zeek said, 'I was supposed to say, “me” at the end, not my name.”

“So, if your human knows the tree chant, I can send out a message using the root system throughout the forest to listen for a human who knows the chant and see if he is looking for you. That way one of you won’t be moving about,” said Locasta. “That is if you like to stop and wait, at least for a short conversation or two.”

“But my human doesn’t know how to speak tree,” said StellaLuna

“There are many ways to get humans to listen,” said Locasta. “A carefully dropped pinecone … or two, is a subtle way to get a human’s attention. Suddenly, their ears are quite aware. We can be less subtle when we need to be.

“Okay” said StellaLuna. “I guess I can wait and listen for a while. ”

“Message sent,” said Locasta.”Is there anything you would like to ask a very old tree?”

“Do all trees have a face, or just some trees?” said StellaLuna.

“All life has a face,” said Locasta. “Usually several; sometimes you just need to change your perspective to see them. Although some of us do tend to hide, a face inside … until we're ready to show the world.”
