Chapter 3

One day when there was a break in pet sitting, Me said to StellaLuna, “Would you like to go for a short adventure today? I heard a myth about a nearby forest, and I would like to go visit this mythical place to see if it’s true … it's not far from here”. StellaLuna had never heard the words myth or mythical before, but they sounded like fun, magical, and exciting words, so StellaLuna barked, "Yes!" Me started the Crittercar and only drove a short distance to a parking lot near the edge of a great forest. On a little island in the center of the parking lot was a giant old tree, with a giant crook in the middle of it; and two children were laughing and playing as they climbed all about the giant crook in the tree.

Me parked the car, and they walked to the forest entrance where they stopped, so Me could look at a big map attached to a large wooden sign. ”Okay,” said Me after staring at the map for some time. “We can either go left or right at the first fork and then continue to do the opposite until we get back here. What do you think StellaLuna, should we start by going left, or right?” “Left”, barked StellaLuna. “Right it is”, said Me. “So, the myth I heard is that the forest trees have faces”, continued Me. “And they like to hide … most times in plain sight, as they watch you walk by. But, if you chant the following words they will reveal themselves”. Me then chanted the following words clearly and most importantly loudly “Olly olly eyes in trees … pop out … say hello to me.” Me then looked at StellaLuna and said, “Let's go see if it worked”.

When they got to where the trail forked, which wasn’t very far up the path, Me suddenly stopped when he saw a giant face in a tree ahead of them. “ Well, hello there, nice to see you,” said Me. StellaLuna looked and saw the face in the tree too. She ran up to the tree, paused, then sat in front of it, staring at the kind old face in the tree.

“Hello,” said the tree to StellaLuna in a slow, creaky, low voice with a strange accent. ”My name is Dodgson, I love to greet all those that say the chant and enter this way.”

“Did you hear that?” barked StellaLuna to Me. “The tree can talk”.

“Yes StellaLuna, I see the face too,” said Me, obviously not being able to understand dog very well yet … yet let alone tree.

“Hi, I'm StellaLuna," said StellaLuna. "My human doesn't talk dog very well. I don’t think he knows tree at all.”

"I have yet to meet one that can anymore," said Dodgson. "So, I too doubt he can. But, I say “hello”, just in case … at least he knows the chant … it woke me up. You might not have seen me if I was still napping.”

“I wonder if he will ever understand what I am saying?” said StellaLuna.

“Keep talking,” said Dodgson. “I’m sure someday they will listen”.

Me watched as StellaLuna barked and made other odd noises at the tree … then stopped and pricked her ears up, as if she was waiting for the tree to answer. “I think she’s trying to talk to the tree”, he thought to himself.“ You don't have to keep barking at the tree, its bark is worse than its bite,” said Me and then laughed a little. StellaLuna gave Me one of her head tilt looks … and Dodgson just gave a short tree groan.

“Bark goodbye to your friend,” said Me, “We only have a short time before we have to go back to work … and we have just begun today’s adventure.
