Chapter 6

It was a warm sunny day. Me and StellaLuna were out taking care of critter clients, as usual. StellaLuna was in the back of the car enjoying all the different sights and smells as they drove around. She had her water bowl, her car bone, and various other things to chew on if she so desired. Me had all the windows open in the car as far as they could go, to keep the Crittercar cool on the warm day. They had finished all the dog walks for the day and only had one more job to do.

Me drove up to a client’s house and parked the car under some shady trees nearby. “This is Mr. Scribble's house,” Me said to StellaLuna. “He's a cat and has no interest in going for a walk, so we'll just stay inside and do cat things while you wait in the car. But once I am done visiting, we will have the rest of the afternoon off. Over there is a different entrance to the forest they call “Where Woods” for some reason. We can leave the car here and walk over there when I am done. I haven’t been to this part of the forest in a very long time … and you haven’t been here at all yet. This is going to be an exciting adventure for us. I’ll be back after I’m done, so you wait here like a good girl … and then we’ll go for another adventure in the forest.” StellaLuna barked with her happy bark.

While StellaLuna was waiting in the car, looking out the window at the forest, she started to get very excited and a little antsy about finding new friends. “I can go into the forest now and start looking around for a little while, while Me is working,” she thought to herself. “I'm sure he will be able to catch up … how big can the forest be?” And so, StellaLuna jumped out of the window and ran up to the forest without Me.

Once she got up to the forest entrance, she stopped for a second and looked around. “I guess this entrance doesn’t have a Dodgson,” she said to herself. She looked down at the two paths in front of her, one went towards the left, and the other towards the right. “This must be a loop path like the one Dodgson watches,” she thought to herself. “Hmm, which way should I go?” As she looked down one path, and then the other, and back to the first one, and then again to the other, she thought she saw a face at the end of one of them. “I choose this one” she barked as she ran down the path to say hello … but when she got to where she saw the face, it was gone. “Where did they go?” she said to herself as she continued along the path, finally stopping where it crossed another path. “Hmmmmm … now which way should I go?” she thought to herself, when again she thought she saw a face down one of the paths, and again there wasn't a face there when she got there. This happened a few times more, and StellaLuna was starting to get a little frustrated. “Why do the faces keep disappearing when I get near?” she said to herself. “What did Me say about them hiding? … and what to do when they hide. Oh yeah … the tree chant.”
